Firefox and the AUGI Forums, Part II
Now that you are using at worst the latest stable version of Firefox (some out there may be using an alpha build of Firefox 3, code named Gran Paradiso), lets look at a few Dictionary and Translation extensions (Add-ons) that can be plugged into Firefox.
Extensions (Add-ons) allow us to very easily mould Firefox into the web browser that best meets our individual needs / requirements - some argue this is Firefox's number one selling point when it comes to choosing Firefox over other available web browsers eg Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera (a very stable and feature rich browser; is currently one of the most Web Standards compliant browsers on the market. Side note: Expect Firefox 3 to be raising the bar when it comes to Web Standards compliance; since Alpha 2, Firefox 3 has also passed the Acid2 Test), Flock (built on code from Mozilla; this browser offers some very nice features built-in), Maxthon (built on Internet Explorer; but do not left that put you off too much ;-) it is actually quite a good browser - version 2 which is currently in beta is definitely a step up from 1.5), etc.
Dictionary Extensions (Add-ons):
- DictionarySearch - Look up the meaning of a user selected (highlighted) word via an online dictionary.
- Dictionary Switcher - Toggle between installed dictionaries automatically or manually, plus displays the currently selected dictionary in the status bar.
- Dictionary Tooltip - Look up the meaning of a user selected word via an online dictionary, all within a nicely controlable window
Translation Extensions (Add-ons):
- gTranslate - Translate any user selected text. Uses Google's translation services to translate the text.
- translator - Translate any web page into nearly any language at the click of a button.
The additionally functionality offered by the above Extensions (Add-ons), should definitely come in handy when using the AUGI Forums - and especially useful if you would like to make full use of the growing International forums on offer [ AUGInternational ].
Side note: The Google Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer (IE 7 version) offers translation among its many features.
